National To get an absentee ballot? If you are registered to vote you can call your election office (Secretary of State usually) and request RIGHT THEN that you want to receive an absentee ballot even if it's months before the election. They will keep your name and send the ballot out when it is in its final form, with all candidates? names, initiatives, etc. If it doesn't come, your voter information mailer will have a copy you can tear off....but start calling to get one when you think they shouuld be out just to be sure. If you vote by absentee ballot there is no chance of losing your vote because of an unexpected emergency or a hanging chad or electronic machine failure or tampering (depending on your degree of educated paranoia.) When your ballot arrives, fill it out as soon as possible. Be sure to follow all directions carefully, including signing it! Then just pop it in the mail. It must be received on or before election day in order to have your vote counted.
To register to vote: Nationally, pleasee call your Secretary of State's office. For California call 1.800.345.VOTE, and a state registration form will be mailed to you. You also can register online(at least in California). Just write in the words Voter Registration plus your County?s name, and you will be on your way. Also, you may well be able to find forms at the post office, your local library and the DMV. Fill in the registration form and mail it back as soon as possible. You should receive a notice by mail that you are registered to vote. If you do not receive the notice within three weeks of mailing, call your County Elections office, and ask if you are registered. Re deadline to do that....states differ. In California, the deadline to register to vote for an election is 15 days before each local and statewide election day, so please register early!
