Donna Mitroff
In September, 2002, Dr. Mitroff was named President of Mediascope, a Los Angeles based nonprofit research and policy organization that promotes issues of social relevance within the entertainment industry. From 1997 - 1999, Dr. Mitroff served at Fox Family Worldwide as Vice President of Policies and Practices in Programming, Education and Community Issues. In 1999, she was promoted to Senior Vice President, a position she has held through April, 2002, when the company was acquired by ABC/Disney and relaunched as ABC Family. As Senior Vice President of Policies and Practices in Programming, Education and Community Issues, at Fox Family Worldwide she oversaw the ongoing Educational and Public Affairs efforts of both the Fox Kids network and the Fox Family Channel. Her responsibilities included the implementation of FCC educational programming requirements; consultations with program executives on the overall philosophical direction of the network; establishing Standards and Practices; development of program outreach materials and educational content for ancillary media services; management of national advisory boards; educational representative for governmental, educational, and professional organizations; and researching policies, trends and issues impacting childrenıs and family programming. Dr. Mitroff is currently working as the principal consultant to the ABC Cable Networks Group on the development and implementation of a major public affairs campaign designed to increase family involvement in children's education. Dr. Mitroff joined Fox Kids in December, 1997, after running her own company, Mitroff Media Makers (M3), which focused on the quality, content and supply of educationally oriented media products for children and families. M3 developed and produced projects for public broadcast through the television station WQED in Pittsburgh, including a 90-minute drama ıRinko:The Best Bad Thing,ı which aired on PBS in May 1998. M3 also provided educational consulting services to Saban Entertainment on the development of the critically acclaimed series ıThe All New Captain Kangaroo,ı created the educational curriculum guide for ıWimzieıs House,ı a pre-school series produced by CINAR Films in Canada, and developed the curriculum framework for the Fox Kids PSA campaign, ıCheck Yourself.ı Prior to forming her own company, Dr. Mitroff served as Vice President of WQEDıs West Coast office for more than a decade, where she was Executive in Charge of Production for several public broadcast and commercial series, including National Geographic Specials, Development Director for the ıWonderWorks Family Movie,ı and Executive Producer for ıFixer Uppersı for the Hughes/Galaxy science curriculum. In 1992, she Co-Executive Produced (with Donna Brown Guillaume) the Wonderworks special "You Must Remember This," which received the Humanitas Certificate in July, 1993. In 1994, she served as Co-Executive Producer for the Fox Kids pre-school education block, FOX CUBHOUSE, and its segmented series, JOHNSON AND FRIENDS. Dr. Mitroff began her work in television with WQED Pittsburgh in 1979, serving as Director of Educational Services before moving to Los Angeles to head up the PBS affiliateıs West Coast Office. Dr. Mitroff holds a Ph.D. in Education and a Masterıs Degree in Special Education. Her teaching experience encompasses elementary, special and higher education, with formal training in child development, remedial reading, program evaluation and research. She is currently an Adjunct Professor in the Annenberg School of Communication at the University of Southern California where she teaches about a wide range of issues in childrenıs media. Dr. Mitroff has served on several national advisory committees and international childrenıs programming juries and has been a consultant to many of Hollywoodıs major childrenıs programming organizations. She is a member of numerous professional organizations, including the Cable Television Public Affairs Association, Women in Cable and Television Communications, the National Advisory Board for ıThe Discovery Rooms Projectı in the California Museum of Science and Industryıs expansion and Chairperson of the Board of Advisors for Mediascope. She has also served three terms on the Board of Governors of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, representing the Childrenıs Programming Peer Group.
